AREA OF STUDY- GONDA (UTTAR PRADESH)

BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY
Gender inequality is a reality in rural India. Rural women have less access to a range of resources, from land rights and credit to education and technology. When it comes to education, female students face variety of challenges ranging from high dropout rates in higher education to gender biased behaviour of family and society. There are multiple ways in which the educational journey of female students in rural areas is hampered and compromised: the phenomenon of gender discrimination hidden within the larger social environment, the gender inequalities exist in family values and female’s unconscious feeling of inferiority. Every day, girls face barriers to education caused by poverty, cultural norms and practices, poor infrastructure, violence and fragility. Girls’ education goes beyond getting girls into school. It is also about ensuring that girls learn and feel safe while in school; have the opportunity to complete all levels of education, acquiring the knowledge and skills to compete in the labour market; gain socio-emotional and life skills necessary to navigate and adapt to a changing world; make decisions about their own lives; and contribute to their communities and the world. A 2018 World Bank study estimates that the “limited educational opportunities for girls, and barriers to completing 12 years of education, cost countries between US$15 trillion and $30 trillion in lost lifetime productivity and earnings.” All these factors combined can help lift households, communities, and countries out of poverty
